| Your painting project will only be as good as your prep of the surfaces to be painted. It is essential that the surface be clean and repaired correctly. |
| Using a paintbrush Cut in at the ceiling with a quality narrow edge brush, if wall and ceiling colors are going to be different. Try to keep paint off adjacent surface - remove smudges with a putty knife wrapped in cloth. On large areas, apply paint with a couple overlapping strokes, use the largest brush then feather in with vertical strokes until smooth. At the corners, around trim and whenever not using a roller, cut in with a narrow edge brush. |
Using a roller Match roller nap, a 1/2 inch nap is for flat and semi gloss, on smooth surfaces. a 1/4 nap is for high gloss paint on smooth surfaces. For rough surfaces use a larger nap roller. Dip roller into deep end of pan, spread evenly over nap, try to get an evenly coated roller with no drips. Start painting near the corner of a room using diagonal strokes, work slow and use even strokes. On second stroke, pull roller down diagonally, then roll paint up, spreading in zig zag pattern. Smooth surface by going back and forth over area to even out. |
Painting different shapes For railings use a cloth mitten dipped in paint, use it to reach tight areas and crevices. For pipes use a cylindrical flexible roller. |
| Painting with textured paint In addition to providing a decorative finish, textured paint hides flaws and cracks in the surface. Applying textured paint with a roller requires a heavier nap than smooth paint. |
TIP To asses coverage and hiding ability of your paint, buy a small amount and apply a test patch, allow to dry 24 hours. |

| Estimating paint quanity Calculate square footage of walls by adding the length of a room to width then multiplying by 2, then multiplying result by rooms height. Compare square footage by coverage given on label. For two coats double number of cans. |
